What's the difference between VOIP and a traditional Phone System?

VOIP works differently from a traditional landline phone system. Regular landline phones use a circuit switching method to connect calls. When you call through the Public Switched Telephone Network(PSTN), your connection to the person on the other end is through a circuit. The circuit switching technology has been around for more than 100 years. Although it is old, it is still reliable, but not the most efficient and cost-effective.

On the other hand, VOIP uses packet switching methods, which means data is sent only when required. Instantaneous connection is created each time you speak, and connection doesn't have to go both ways every time. While communicating, you and the other person you speak to won't speak at the same time normally.

The data packets are sent efficiently and use many different paths through the internet. Then the packages are put back together when they reach their destination. In addition, the data packets are compressed to save space which lets them travel even more quickly through the internet.
